TOOTHPASTE IN A TUBE IS BORN
When it was first invented by Dr. Washington Wentworth Sheffield, a respected dentist from New London, Connecticut Toothpaste in a Tube Is Born: In the mid-1870s, in between tooth cleanings and dental surgeries, Dr. Sheffield found time to formulate a ‘creme dentrifice’ that his patients said ‘left a very pleasing taste in their mouths,’ replacing the unsavory, grainy powders of the time. A short time later, Sheffield’s son, Lucius, came back from Paris with the idea to put toothpaste in tubes after seeing the local painters use collapsible ones – and the rest is history. Dr. Sheffield’s invention has yet to be surpassed and his natural formulation even more relevant today. When Dr. Sheffield conceived his ready-made toothpaste in the mid-19th century, there were no sweeteners like saccharin or foaming agents like sodium lauryl sulfate.

Great Toothpaste and it’s natural!
I really like this toothpaste, it is a little getting used to because the mint is stronger and more natural tasting if you are used to other kinds of toothpaste, but I would say the taste is not bad and I do like that it is all natural. I like that the tube is 100% recyclable and that you can get a key for fairly cheap to wind down the tube so that you do not waste any (also great for arthritic hands) It seems to work good for sensitivity and my teeth feel cleaner than they have in a while.

Only Toothpaste I’ll ever buy again
We started buying Dr. Sheffield toothpaste around 8 months ago and haven’t looked back. Taste, texture, quality, simply ingredients, and zero flouride which are all huge wins in our book. As long as they stick to this practice as they have been for year we will continue to buy their quality products. So far we have tried the Wintergreen, Cinnamon, and Strawberry Banana. All are great!

Great product and great price!
Has a great mint taste that’s not too strong. I love that. It has no fluoride. It is gentle on your teeth. And seems to help with breath odor as well. Excellent product! (For a bonus, the tube is like old-fashioned metal type tubes that roll up so great and makes it easy to get all the toothpaste out of the tube.)

Improved Tube Design & Clean, Refreshing Taste
I used this toothpaste a while ago, and I remember the tube being a bit hard to squeeze — but that seems to have been improved, which I really appreciate. It’s now much easier to use. This is my first time trying this particular flavor, and I was pleasantly surprised — it’s light, clean, and not overpowering at all. Compared to fluoride toothpastes, it leaves my mouth feeling much less coated and more refreshed. I do wish it had a slightly cooler, mintier sensation, but overall it’s still excellent. One small suggestion: I’d love it even more if the tube had just a bit more product in it.

Kids love the taste!
My kids 4yo and 13yo, love this toothpaste. They do not like mint flavor so this is top choice for them. Also no worries with accidental swallowing because there is no fluoride. The two pack is a great size for the two kids who brush twice daily the two pack has last them 8 months. Also they are cavity free!

For kids
For adults looking for fluoride-free toothpaste:Why?If you’re cooking with city water and unless you have a really expensive filter, you’re INGESTING fluoride daily. You can’t boil things like Fluoride and heavy metals out of water. So…Are you eating your toothpaste? If you can’t give up the sugary drinks and have a high carry rate, you should probably look for a toothpaste with extra fluoride unless you like going to the dentist. I don’t and I used to work with one. My only advice is from years of observing dental health: Patients on well water that get very little fluoride (most have a high carry rate which prompts the water supply question) and patients who have had too much fluoride along the way and can be observed from teeth formed with hyperplasia. It’s about finding a balance. This toothpaste is great for kids but there are other brands that are fluoride free and seem to work better. Brands that start with M and end in Arvis. Ultimately, my teeth did not feel as clean. The other brand makes my mouth feel cleaner than box store toothpastes without the excessive foam. THIS brand is too viscous without the grit- no abrasion whatsoever. It’s like brushing with pudding. Just thought I’d try it because the flavors are fun.Nothing personal but just saying there are better fluoride-free brands have a few fun flavors. To be fair, i should include I’ve only tried the strawberry banana. It is cheaper than my favorite imported brand but I won’t be purchasing again.

If you have sensitive teeth issues, give Dr. Sheffield’s a try.
I used to have a “sensitive teeth” issue when I used Crest products with fluoride. Sometimes it would get so bad that I would make a special appointment with my dentist, where he would take a white strip containing whatever and place it against the bothersome tooth or teeth. That would take care of it for a week or so, but the sensitive teeth issue would always return. Then I read a bunch of studies/reports on the long-term negative health effects of fluoride. Amazingly, over time, fluoride can become toxic for many people, as the body begins to reject the substance. It is called “fluoride toxicity”. At this point instead of fluoride preventing tooth decay, it now promotes tooth decay. Go figure!! When I mentioned this to my dentist, he spoke no words at all. Totally silent!I then decided to stop using Crest and go for an alternative. This is when I came across “Dr. Sheffield’s” toothpaste in CVS.FOR THE RECORD: AFTER ONLY TWO WEEKS OF USING JUST DR. SHEFFIELD’S TOOTHPASTES, MY SENSITIVE TEETH PROBLEMS COMPLETELY WENT AWAY- NEVER TO RETURN!! This was about three years or so ago. I do not know if it was the fluoride, the foaming agents, or whatever other crap Crest puts in their toothpaste, but I now believe Crest toothpaste was causing my sensitive teeth issues. Dr. Sheffield’s uses natural ingredients and it does foam without the need for foaming agents. Dr. Sheffield’s cured my sensitive teeth issue- for good. When I also mentioned this to my dentist, he spoke no words at all. Totally silent! When my checkup was over I received my little samples bag with a toothbrush, floss, and you guessed it- Crest toothpaste with fluoride. Even after three years I still get Crest with fluoride samples. These drug companies even own the dentists!Just this year (2025) a federal judge agreed with the scientific studies and declared that fluoride can cause learning disabilities and other issues for children. So do yourselves a favor and try your best to avoid fluoride.Think of it this way: why are corporations and the federal government pushing fluoride on us all? Since when is it the feds job to prevent tooth decay through forced fluoridation? Maybe they all know, because if fluoride toxicity, that large numbers of people will experience negative effects, including learning disabilities. It almost seems like they want us to stay sick and stupid. I say stay healthy, question everything, and think for yourselves.

Dr. Sheffield’s Natural Toothpaste offers a refreshing and effective alternative to conventional toothpaste brands, especially for those seeking a fluoride-free, natural option. This toothpaste is free from fluoride, artificial sweeteners, synthetic foaming agents (like SLS), and preservatives. The natural ingredients give it a clean, fresh feel in the mouth without the harsh aftertaste sometimes found in other natural brands. What stands out is its performance—it cleans thoroughly, leaves your mouth feeling fresh, and even helps with mild whitening over time. It also has a nostalgic to me, apothecary-style packaging that’s recyclable and made from metal, not plastic. If you love a metallic aesthetic, that’s a plus! However, those used to traditional toothpaste might find the texture a little different, slightly grittier or less foamy. The lack of fluoride, while a plus for some, might be a downside for those who prefer the added cavity protection it offers.Pros:- Fluoride-free and made with natural ingredients- No artificial sweeteners, SLS, or preservatives- Gentle yet effective cleaning- Eco-friendly aesthetic metal tube packaging- Subtle, pleasant natural flavorsCons:- Less foamy than conventional toothpastes- No fluoride (may not suit everyone’s dental needs)- Ridiculously priced up here
