From a leading nutrition researcher, this diet book offers easy to follow guidance and meal plans so you can lose the weight and keep it off—without depriving yourself the way other diets require.
As a society, we keep looking for ways to lose weight—preferably ones that are simple, effective, and permanent. When properly chosen, certain foods cause weight loss, with no need for restriction and calorie counting.
In The Power Foods Diet, Dr. Neal Barnard reveals three breakthroughs that are supported by research, revealing that certain foods:
1. Reduce the appetite.
2. Trap calories so they are flushed away and cannot be absorbed.
3. Increase the body’s ability to burn calories for three hours after meals.
Dr. Barnard includes a simple to follow meal plan that includes delicious, and even indulgent recipes so that you can enjoy your meals while releasing weight.

Dr. Barnard’s Best Book to Date
Reading through “The Power Foods Diet,” and I can say, it’s Dr. Barnard’s best book yet. If you’ve read any of his other books, you know the book is very well-researched and trustworthy. It’s presenting a new approach to healthy eating, overall health, as well as weight loss, with concise and easy to read text and recipes. I read a lot of surprising things about foods I thought I already knew about. What’s more, there are a ton of recipes in the book accompanied by really excellent food photography. These recipes look amazing! All seem easy to prepare and look really tasty, with an appealing layout for ease of reading. The book also doesn’t back away from controversy. For example, it points out negatives about coconut oil, salmon, and other foods some might claim to be “healthy.” This book is highly recommended for anyone of any age interested in healthy eating.

Wonderful book
The first thing you notice with this book is gorgeous food photography (by Dustin Harder). The recipe ingredient lists are (thankfully) short and the ingredients are available anywhere, and I like the fact that the book has lots of information and tips for people who do not cook and want convenience foods. However, the most important thing about The Power Foods Diet is that it is (to me, at least) a completely new way of thinking about foods and using foods to get healthy and lose weight. It gets away from calorie-counting, fear of carbs, fat-shaming, etc., etc., and provides empowering information you can use. Who knew that cinnamon or ginger could help with weight loss or that fiber could trap calories in your digestive tract so you can’t absorb them? I like the fact that Dr. Barnard takes pains to show the scientific evidence and separate truth from fads, and does this without a lot of fluff.

We love it!
I have eaten WFPB for 10 years and have read most of Dr. Gregor’s, Dr. Fuhrman’s and Drs. Sherzai’s books and apply their recommendations for all of our meals, with GREAT health outcomes. Even so we learned some tips from Dr. Barnard’s book.We especially appreciated his very brief summary of the portfolio diet, for extra tweaks to lower bad cholesterol. The recipes look delicious and I plan to try many of them. Beautiful pictures are included for many. They use conveniences of some canned foods and already prepared vegan foods, etc. as options. Busy people will probably especially like that.Wish we had got it when it first came out. Yes, it’s much like other WFPB author’s books. But it has some useful tweaks. And Dr. Barnard has a gift for clearly and quickly getting to the bottom line on some things that the WFBP world debates.

Life-Enhancing Information
I have “always” struggled with weight, topping out at 283 pounds. A heart spasm and angiogram got my attention and started me on this journey of discovering. My go-to has become those, like Dr. Barnard, who focus their advice on science-based and peer-reviewed evidence. This book is foundational. If you want to know the truth about health and how your body can react to the right foods — whole foods, plant-based — then devour this book today. You’ll be so glad you did…I know I am.

Low fat Vegan
This book basically pushes a low fat, vegan diet, which is totally fine, but I felt it was more anti fat than pro power foods. Emphasis was placed on avoiding sources of fat, including avocados(!), meat, dairy, and extra virgin olive oil. I didn’t see many new recommendations, other than what we already (should) know: eat more fruits, vegetables, spices, and whole grains. I recommend reading this because the advice is sound and there are many good recipes. I recommend also reading Eat to Beat Disease by William Li for some less restrictive ideas.

excellent book
This book has medical study references and is easy to read and follow. Love the recipes included as well as pictures. Breaks it all down and explains why our current American diets are making us ill and how eating plant based is the true healthy diet. I am excited to share this information and educate my patients.

Love educators like Dr Neal Barnard
This book is filled with great information! I just thought it was different! I thought it was a full on cookbook. It’s more of a book with some recipes in the back. There are a few pictures scattered in but not for every recipe at all & actually not next to any of the recipes either. I ended up returning because I would rather just buy the audio version to listen to on my walks since it’s more of a book. The recipes looks good but it’s not written or organized like a cookbook at all. I still recommend this for anyone who is looking for more of a book set up though!

The TRUTH about nutrition, losing weight, and saving your life!
This is a highly motivational book to help us reverse our diseases and get the weight off! Excellent science documented – I’d like to get the studies to my physician friends who are behind the times on lifestyle medicine! Best Barnard book yet! This book arrived on time and I was so glad I had time to read most of it before watching the webinars that illustrate and educate.

A wee bit pricey but good info (wait for the paperback if price is an issue). Heads up: It’s promoting vegan and low fat, but explains in understandable language why this is very healthful, and gives variety of lots of good recipes that are not tricky to follow. Since I’ve had problems with the keto (high fat) diets, I need an alternative that is edible, and I like to eat real foods, not processed or packaged meals. Food selections will not break the bank if you look around or ask at your health food store. In general I like this book.
