Fish smell is bit strong.
I bought this food for my Chihuahua Ollie to help him with weight loss. When I opened the bag of chicken and fish recipe, I find the fish smell is a bit strong. I decided to take the whole bag and mix it in with his other small breed of dry food chicken recipe; that is the only way he eats it.

Weight Management is Great for Dogs with Gastrointestinal Issues
One of my pups has been having some weird health issues, including an intermittent hiatal hernia. My vets’ recommended a gastroenteric food from a different brand, that had horrible ingredients. The vet said “if this doesn’t work, you can try a weight management food with low fat/carbs and high protein.” After looking at dozens of food brands, I was SO HAPPY to learn that Open Farm came out with this Healthy Weight formula. I already was using another Open Farm food for my dogs, so this was an easy choice for my medical anomaly. Fortunately he isn’t allergic to chicken, like one of my others, so this is the best food for him! My other two are on the grain free beef and all 3 of them are doing wonderfully and get stellar remarks at their annual vet exams!

Great ingredients but not formulated for weight loss and vitality!
Please note that I’m not a nutritionist for pets but I am working with one while I try to get my dogs healthy so I’ve learned what helps reduce their weight and keep them healthy while doing the weight loss. Look most humans have an issue with weight and finding the right balance too, becomes a chore. So seeking out advice is my responsibility as a pet owner because they can’t do it and they can’t eat like a human because their body need different things than humans do. Anyhow, this food while having great ingredients is missing several key things for a dog to lose weight!Price is very high for crunchy dog food but the dogs eat every bite. I do top it with freeze dried so they are getting what they like. The reason this doesn’t get 5 stars is because for pet weight loss, this is not correctly balanced. It has fish and chicken which are very important to weight loss and provide health benefits as well. Dogs needing to lose weight need more fiber and typically in the double digits (over 10) – this below all standards at 4 and needs to increase for any breed and age. Dieting dogs need muscle, tone, and energy to burn off some fat which this food is pretty low in everything including protein – so I have to ask that if this food isn’t primarily protein, doesn’t have fiber, nor moisture then what is it? Dogs need organ meats not what humans eat like chicken breasts and ground beef; organs will provide denser proteins, minerals and vitamins plus organ mean tend to be cheaper than what humans eat! Additionally, moisture is critical to digestion and evacuating the food and this is super low — lower than most dry kibble, which means I need to make sure they drink well after eating this and add bone broth (more calories) to it for added moisture. While the calories and ingredients are great, it’s just missing some key ingredient to make this the best and worth the price they are asking.Can I make this work since they like it, sure but with all the additions I need, it’s quite expensive. I will continue to look elsewhere but it would be nice if they just adjusted the formula for better weight management and vitality.

Good food, lower carbs for weight loss
My dog liked Open Farm dog food in the past, so when she needed to lose weight after TPLO surgery, I turned to its new Healthy Weight formula. So far, so good. Our dog likes fish-based kibble (fish being the most digestible protein for dogs), so the chicken/herring meal/whitefish formula made her gobble her kibble. I was also looking for a lower carb kibble, and this fits the bill. In fact, I love, love Open Farm’s website with its transparent Complete Nutritional Profile link under Nutrition & Benefits: Healthy Weight gets 33% of its calories from carbs, 28.82% as fed, 31.33% as dry matter. Open Farm isn’t your typical junk food , mystery meat kibble; it’s good food from traceable sources you can trust.

The best dog food ever! High fiber
My 2 year old bulldog mix struggles with partial incontince and this food has helped SOOO much! I wanted simple and clean ingredients and checked many many brands fiber content to find the highest I could with the best ingredients. His BM are now a lot cleaner and saving my house and him from constant baths. He loves the taste also! very much worth the price and great value!

Bought this 4 lb bag of Open Farm Healthy Weight Dog Food for our 3 year old Lab that needs to lose weight. Currently have been giving him Pro-Plan Vet Diet Dry Food, and he has lost a little weight but, after reading about this food, I decided to give it a try. He normally eats 1/2 cup of dry food for breakfast and then another cup at dinner with home cooked chicken, beans, pumpkin etc. He at first went to sniff it, but then gobbled it right up, so I will watch and see.
