Slightly misleading description, but still a great item.
I’m not a huge fan of the way this is described and marketed. Remember, laws exist that making tracking others illegal without their consent. Some of the item descriptions suggest this is what you “could” use this item for. Second criticism is labeling this as a GPS device. While it is true that you can use this item to track and find what it is attached to, it’s not a true GPS device.Let’s break this tag down a little bit. It appears to be modeled off of the air tag concept. It uses the iOS “find my” app. What’s cool is, if the battery gets low, you can swap out the large button battery making this a long term use item. Being magnetic makes mounting this super easy. If it’s being attached to a non metallic object, there are adhesive tabs that create a metal contact surface. Also, the silicone cover offers great weather protection if externally mounted. This item does not use direct GPS, nor does it provide any tracking history. When close to any Apple device, the “Find My” network registers its general proximity based of the gps of the Apple device that was nearby. Because of the encrypted nature of the device and the network used, last know location is as good as it gets. It’s also important to note that most phones send alerts if a device appears to be following you, and this item is no exception. What’s is cool about it, there is no subscription service needed to work, unlike other popular tag-like device brands. The magnetic hold is strong, but in my case I just toss it by the spare tire so it’s where I know it is. Mostly I use these in my older work car. That way if I’m not responsive for a medical reason or I get involuntary liberated and separated from my vehicle, or I leave the road in bad weather, I can have a chance of recovering my car or my family finding me.
